Artist's Bio
Jane Bradley has painted the people and places of
the West for years. As a child growing up in Salt Lake City, Utah
she displayed an affinity for animals and art. Her love of horses
was matched only by the pleasure she took in drawing them. In high
school she began painting with oils, her favored medium to this
day.
Jane nurtured her talents while studying in Europe
under, among others, the accomplished German painter Franc Büehler.
After time away to raise her family (she has two grown sons), she
returned to school in the '80s to earn her Bachelors of Fine Arts
at the University of Utah. Studying for her degree, she began experimenting
with computers in her art. Three years later, she became one of
the first women in America to earn a Masters in the growing field
of Computer Animation.
After enjoying a long career in computer graphics
and video game production, serving as art director for two major
companies, Jane decided to return full-time to her first
love of painting. Since moving to Arizona, Jane has found a wealth of
inspiration in her surroundings. Her work combines both realistic
and romantic visions of the West: the rodeo cowboy, the native tribes
of the Southwest, and, of course, the horses. Inspired by Frederick
Remington's energy and immediacy, but also by Edward Hopper's empathy
for the individual she distinguishes her paintings from the more
documentary work of genre painters. "Western art can also be
fine art," she explains. "It can communicate something
personal to us even if we will never, ourselves, ride across the
desert on horseback or dance the dance of our ancestors. Art can
forge a bond of empathy between strangers. I want my work to do
precisely that."
Jane frequently participates in juried shows, including the Phippen Museum Western Art Show, the Southwestern Art Show in Indio, the Empire Ranch Western Art Show, and many others. In 2006, her painting “Red Shoes” won Best of Show and First Place in Oil at the Phippen Western Art Show, and was featured in Southwest Art..
